Tesco's `Free Fruit For Kids' Initiative Proves A Hit With Shoppers

by Benson Agoha In Lagos / Nigeria

A new initiative by Britain's High Street giant Tesco has reportedly proved a hit with parents and children alike.

Tesco adopted a suggestion by one staff to substitute fruits for sweets given to children accompanying adults during shopping.

Launched two years ago, the programme has already seen Tesco give away over 50 million pieces of free fruit to children.

A successful test-run in Tesco's Brigg Superstore, Lincolnshire has seen the high street grocer roll out the scheme in over 800 stores across the UK, Tesco said in a new Press Release on Thursday.

Tesco said its research had shown a third of parents saying their children have eaten more fruit thanks to the scheme. The Supermarket chain said three quarters of parents confirm that the initiative has made their shopping trip easier.

by Benson Agoha in Lagos, Nigeria

Some 16,250 African Migrants to Israel will be resettled instead of deporting them, according to latest report published by the Times of Israel.

The report said others will go to Scandinavian countries.

Major world media including the BBC and ABC News have already reported the death of one Africa's most renowned women.

Her campaigns were not limited to political fairness but also touched issues such as gender equality. According to media reports, the freedom fighter died following a long illness that had kept her in and out of hospital since the start of the year.

According to a statement released by her family, Winnie Mandela "... fought valiantly against the apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country,"

"She kept the memory of her imprisoned husband Nelson Mandela alive during his years on Robben Island and helped give the struggle for justice in South Africa one its most recognisable faces" the statement said.

Winnie Mandela was a dogged fighter and her exploits at Beijing 1995 was contributory to the famous Beijing Declaration for Gender Equality which saw South Africa's Commission for Gender Equality release the Country's Platform for Action Statement in March 2010.

May her soul rest in peace.

£1m Innovation Fund To Lead The Way On Meeting Needs Of Looked After Children

 Cllr Miranda Williams
by our RBG Correspondent in Woolwich

A £1million award from the Department for Education’s innovation fund will help the Royal Borough of Greenwich and five other south London boroughs lead the way on meeting the needs of looked after children.

The proposed scheme will improve access to high-quality residential care and fostering placements for children who are in the care of local councils.

The successful bid was submitted by six members of the South London Commissioning Programme, a partnership of 10 boroughs. By combining their buying power and developing shared systems the London boroughs of Greenwich, Croydon, Merton, Sutton, Bexley and Lewisham aim to improve the supply of affordable, high-quality accommodation for looked after children that provides them with a safe and happy home and helps them reach their full potential.

Councillor Miranda Williams, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People (top right) said: “I’m so pleased that the Department for Education have seen the benefits of our proposals and now we can develop a blueprint that will enable local authorities across the country to follow in our footsteps.”

The funding will allow the South London Commissioning Programme to build expertise and develop systems that will significantly improve the ways that services and placements are commissioned.

As the partnership’s influence grows it is expected it will be able to help new businesses enter the market to deliver the services that are needed in the right places.

The proposal also includes work with current looked after children and their carers to involve them more in designing the shape of future services so they best meet their needs.

The partnership has already received widespread recognition for the work it has done to improve value for money in local government and has won accolades including the LGC Award for Efficiency. This was judged and awarded by the National Audit Office and was awarded for delivering enhanced services for children and young people with special educational needs across 10 boroughs – the first of its kind in the country.

Enviro Champ Boosts Christmas Crackdown on Fly-tipping

by our RBG Correspondent In Woolwich

A local Environment Champion is working with residents and Council officers to clamp down on fly-tipping and littering in his local area.

Jeffrey Tian contacted the Royal Borough’s Enviro-crime Enforcement Team in November to report a fly-tip in a layby between Battery Road and Kentlea Road in Thamesmead. This area is known as a fly-tipping hotspot.

The Council’s “Plumstead Taskforce” quickly responded to the call, had the materials removed immediately and door-knocked local residents to encourage them to help tackle this type of enviro-cime.

Mr Tian further united local residents in committing to keep the local area free of litter. He also volunteered to work with the Council to establish a new Neighbourhood Watch team in the area to deter future fly-tips.

This latest initiative forms part of a wider Christmas crackdown on fly-tipping which saw the Royal Borough of Greenwich conducting joint operations with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Metropolitan Police to identify unlicensed waste vehicles. This resulted in a number of enforcement investigations and actions.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environment said,

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to do all we possibly can to tackle fly-tipping. We have three taskforce teams which perform intelligence gathering, rapid fly-tip removal and issue £400 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs)- the maximum fine allowed by law.

“However, we are clear that we cannot win this battle alone. We need the eyes and ears of residents like Mr. Tian who provide invaluable intelligence and support.

“Our work with residents in Battery Road is part of a shift in our campaign to reporting fly-tippers and not just the fly tip. Through working together, we can drive up the fines and drive down the number of fly-tips in the borough.”

Local Environment Champion Jeffrey Tian added:

“I am very happy with the council’s action and I believe the residents in this area must be very pleased to see such a big change. I am honoured to have the title of Environment Champion and I know we can continue to work jointly with the council on more ideas and measures to combat fly-tipping in this area.”

Thamesmead - Illegal House In Multiple Occupation Landlord Fined £2900

by our Correspondent in Woolwich

A rogue landlord has been found guilty of seven separate charges relating to an illegally-run House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). The property at Austen Close, Thamesmead, was found in a very poor condition by Royal Greenwich officers with damp, mould and inadequate smoke alarms.

The Royal Borough first became suspicious of the property after Council Tax enquiries led officers to believe that it was inhabited by multiple families even though it was not registered as an HMO.

Upon inspection, Royal Borough officers found the property to be in a hazardous state. Multiple families were living in cramped conditions with several mattresses strewn over the floor, blocked fire-exits and very poor ventilation. Officers also noted inadequate fire precautions throughout the property as well as excessive damp and mould on the ground floor.

Mr. Chiedozie Ogbuka, the owner of the property, was found guilty of seven separate charges pertaining to multiple health and safety breaches as well as failing to respond to letters and a formal notice from the Royal Borough of Greenwich. He was fined £2900 and ordered to pay £1800 in costs with a victim surcharge of £75.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Environment Councillor Jackie Smith, top right, said: “Our proactive approach to tackling rogue landlords continues to pay off as more heavy fines are issued to those who think that they are above the law. Properties with inadequate smoke detectors and safety features are not just illegal; they also pose a terrible risk to the tenants living there.

This successful case emphasises the importance of having properly regulated and licensed HMOs with rental agreements and facilities which meet the legal standard. It also coincides with our public consultation on extending our licensing of HMOs so that we can continue to drive up the standard of the private rented housing sector in the borough.

I encourage tenants, landlords and wider residents who may be affected by these changes to take part in our consultation and work with us in our borough-wide campaign to tackle rogue landlords for good.”

If you are concerned that a private property may be overcrowded or operating illegally, you can contact the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 020 8921 8157 or email residentialservices@royalgreenwich.gov.uk.

VW Brand's US Sales Rise for First Time in Over a Year

by Benson Agoha In Lagos

Credit: Indutry Week
More than a year on and after accepting to settle a record $16.5 billion in litigation charges, Volks Wagen sales in the United States of America has finally notched upwards, according an Industry Week report.

The German auto-maker was exposed last September as using a smart software referred to as "defeat device" to hide emission levels from auto-testers.  The company admitted the allegation, leading to the exit of its former CEO just one day before he was to sign a new contract.

The incidence forced German authorities to respond with several arrests at home, as the government moved to check the embarrassment.

Volks Wagen then began recalls in early 2016 to install new software into affected vehicles.

The latest report is evidence that consumer confidence has been restored in the US and by extension, globally.

Royal Greenwich Awarded Clean Air Status

by our RBG Correspondent In Woolwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has been awarded ‘Cleaner Air Borough Status’ for its initiatives to improve air quality in the borough.

The award was given by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and particularly commended: “The continued provision of the monitoring network; the integration of air quality measures into core planning policy and the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment; adoption of 20mph residential traffic zones; improved pedestrian schemes in Woolwich and Eltham; the ‘Greenways’ scheme improving pedestrian access to schools; and, the provision of electric vehicle charging points”.

Other work to address air quality improvements

The Royal Borough recently consulted on its draft Greener Greenwich Strategy and Air Quality Action Plan, which set out how the council will work to reduce emissions in the borough and address current high levels of nitrogen dioxide air pollution, particularly along major roads.

In the summer the council introduced the Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) project in Greenwich West and Peninsula wards – a match-funded project with the GLA. The LEN will look at improving air quality in the area and includes a mixture of ‘smart technology’ as well as tried and tested techniques to reduce transport emissions and works to make the area a more people-friendly neighbourhood.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainability, said: “It is gratifying to receive recognition for our work to improve air quality in the borough. We have tried to come up with innovative ways to make changes to the quality of the air locally, such as through our dedicated LEN project that is looking at what physical changes to the environment can be made, carrying out new tech trials with local residents to encourage the take-up of cleaner/electric vehicles, and to see how we can better manage the freight and transport that flows through that particular area."

“However, we are not complacent - we know that air quality is still a major concern for many residents - and we will continue to strive to improve air quality in our beautiful green borough.”

The Greener Greenwich Strategy is due to go to the council’s Cabinet meeting on 7 December.
