A Preacher was this afternoon injurred and also arrested at the same time, after a disagreement between him and his brother went wrong, in front of the DLR Station, at the beginning of Powis Street, Woolwich.
Eyewitness accounts at the scene were varried.
One witness told Woolwich Online that the Preacher, who regularly preached there, was challenged by his brother to stop preaching. When he refused, his brother tried to push him away. He was said to have fallen to the ground, but stood up and continued to preach.
As they continued to argue, police arrived the scene and tried to seperate them by pushing one of the men away. One was said to have been more agressive and started arguing with them.
He was told to stop preaching by the police as he was disturbing the public peace. But he refused, claiming to be aware of his rights. Police then handcuffed him. Even so, he was said to have continued to argue and, as he strugled, he started bleeding on his wrists.
Another witness said that Police pushed him too hard and he fell to the ground and was generally too harsh on him, injuring him in the process and still arresting him.
An Ambulance was called in and the man was taken to the hospital in handcuffs, even as an crowd was gathering.
A police reinforcement arrived and faced the crowd many of which expressed anger over how the preacher was treated. However, there was no further arrests and the police van drove off.
Almost simultaneously, outside the Tesco Extra Store at the other side of the Town Centre, a male shopper told a female passerby he was in pain over his daughter and needed medical help.
As he sat disraught on the kerb stone beside the road, the woman called an ambulance for him.
However, with the confusion at Powis street, the ambulance was delayed and police arrived there first to keep him company, but when we left the place, his mood appeared to have changed as he was seen an apparent banter, laughing with the two policemen.
It was not immediately clear what happened to his daughter.
