The new stores, termed ‘Triple Zero’ because of their environmental friendly and sustainable features features, will be opened in Leicester and Weymouth.
Sainsbury’s says “Our new ‘Triple Zero’ stores in Leicester and Weymouth Gateway are examples of how we’re achieving this, by using power generated from waste in our supply chain and ‘Water Neutral’, which includes offsetting partnerships in the local community."
The stores features include what it termed ‘Triple Zero’ , explaining that they designed the store with the aim to achieve:
zero carbon emissions from all operational energy used including the use of timber structural frame which creates a lower carbon footprint than standard steel frames.
zero waste goes to landfill because 100% of the waste produced during the construction of the store were reused or recycled.
zero impact on the water usage of the local catchment area because of its ‘Water Neutral’ status because the water required for the store will come through adoption of water efficient measures and infrastructure, 70% of which will come from rainwater harvesting.
The new store planned for Leicester store opens for business on 27th November 2013 and will use solar panels installed on the roof to generate the electricity it requires to power equipment.
Sainsbury’s say it aims to be the UK’s Greenest Grocer by 2020.
