WE WILL NOT WELCOME EDWARD SNOWDEN, SAY BRAZIL by Benson Agoha
* Edward Snowden.
Speculation that Edward Snowden, the American IT expert who compromised state secrets when he leaked information to the public and then fled abroad, may be headed to Brazil from Russia, may not happen.
The speculation heightened when Amnesty International called on the Brazil's government to give "full consideration to Edward Snowden's claim for asylum in the country (Brazil)".
In a news release on Ammnesty International's website Atila Roque, it's Brazil Director said "Edward Snowden has every right to seek permanent asylum and the Brazilian authorities should respond to his initial asylum claim seriously."
Furthermore, the country director said "The claim must be considered in a fair, unbiased and effective refugee determination procedure. It is his right to seek international protection, and it's also Brazil 's international obligation to review and decide on his request under the refugee convention."
Amnesty International made the call on Tuesday 17, 2013 after Snowden offered to help a Brazilian spying probe and asked for asylum in the country.
In an interview, Michael Bochenek, Director of Law and Policy at Amnesty International, said that Edward Snowden should not be condemned without trail by the US authorities.
He said it is of serious concern to Amnesty International "that senior US lawyers and prosecutors are condemning him without a trial...and we think that somebody that his situation should not be condemned without a trial."
But according to Reuters News Agency, an unamed Brazilian official told Brazilian Newspaper, Folha de S.Paulo, that "the Brazilian government has no interest in investigating the mass Internet surveillance programs Snowden revealed in June and does not intend to give him asylum."
Edward Snowden is currently in Russia under a 1 year visa granted by the Vladimir Putin's government after he became stranded on arrival, following the cancellation of his Travel document by US authorities.
