Doctors treating former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon say his condition has deteriorated and puts him in grave condition.

Reports by Associated Press Jerusalem say the former PM who has been in coma since 2006 "suffered a downturn in his health last week with a decline in key bodily organs.

AP said the the Sheba Medical Center announced today that his condition has worsened and his family is by his bedside.

An iconic figure, the former PM suffered a stroke as he aimed towards re-election and has since 14 April 2006, been in coma.

He was a very popular political figure although not very loved in the Arab world.

An ex-army officer, he was a commander in the Israeli Army and played a prominent part in the 1948 war of Independence.
