Former Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon is in critical condition in hospital as he suffers what medical officials described as multi-organ failure.
According the Times of Israel, the Ex-PM's family are on his bedside at the Sheba Medical Center.
His condition has deteriorated in recent days according to the hospitals medical director, Zeev Rotstein. The hospital said it will make further announcements today.
According to the Newspaper "On Wednesday, doctors said Sharon, 85, who has been in a vegetative state since 2006, was suffering from renal failure that could lead to multiple organ system failure and death."
The former PM, a retired Army General and Israeli statesman, served as Israel's 11th Prime Minister from 7 March 2001 to 14 April 2006 when he suffered a stroke and has been in coma for eigth years.
Ex-PM Sharon was a paratrooper and then an officer and commander in the Israeli Army from its inception in 1948. He participated prominently in the 1948 War of Independence.
However, reports that he is dead has been refuted by the hopital which said “We define his condition as critical. His life is definitely in danger.....This is his condition as of today.”
The hospital's director said that the medical condition of the former general and politician has been deteriorating for a very long time and that, thought he would not consider himself a prophet, the general "...feeling among the doctors treating him and the family by his side… is that he has taken a turn for the worse.”
In another development, Israel has begun search for reliable way of protecting itself against misiles attacks from Hizbolla.
Premptively, Israel has begun testing of its `Arrow missile shield' as she sees Hezbollah ballistic threat, Reuters News Agency say.
Reuters say "Israel has successfully tested its upgraded Arrow missile interceptor for the second time today, "pushing forward work on a U.S.-backed defense against ballistic threats it sees from Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas as well as from Iran and Syria."
Israel's Missile shield includes its `Arrow' program which is the long-range segment in Israel's three-tier missile shield.
According to Reuters, this also includes the "Iron Dome" which has proved successful and can "target short-range rockets and mortar bombs favored by Palestinian guerrillas in Gaza, and the mid-range "David's Sling", which is still under development."
Israel's Missile Shield is being developed to work alongside similar programme from the United States.
