No UK Aid To Nigerian Government, But Old Commitments Remain, Say DFID by Benson Agoha

No UK aid money will be given to the Nigerian government according to the Department for International Development.

The clarification comes on the heals of our enquiry to clarify media reports that UK is increasing aid to Nigeria, inspite of the recent anti-gay laws in the country.

DFID said British aid commitments to Nigeria have not changed, despite the Same Sex Marriage Act which recently became effective.

However, DFID said UK aid to Nigeria is channelled through agencies such as the United Nations and not directly from the British government.

The DFID said the stand of the government against sexual discrimination remain in place and no UK aid money will go to the Nigerian government.

In two twitter responses to our tweet, DFID said "Our aid commitments to Nigeria haven’t changed. UK aid to Nigeria goes via agencies like the UN, not the government".

Later adding "We strongly oppose any form of sexual discrimination and no UK aid money goes to the Nigerian government."

Confusion emerged following conflicting media reports that UK was increasing her foreign aid to Nigeria to $430m, even though PM David Cameron had said he would do otherwise if the gay-laws went ahead.
