Tesco has supplied residents in UK's remote iceland of Stornoway for the first time.

In an official statement Tesco said customers on the Isle of Lewis will be able to enjoy grocery home delivery for the first time.

The statement said "Thousands of people living in the Western Isles of Scotland will be able to have their grocery shopping delivered to their homes for the first time, as Tesco launches its dotcom service on the Isle of Lewis today [Tuesday 21 January]."

Tesco said the direct delivery service will be provided from it's store in Stornoway, the capital of Isle of Lewis. Stornoway is approximately 15 hours or 719.2 miles from London. At a distance of 631 miles from Reykjavik, it is closer to Iceland than London.

Tesco said the new online service will create 29 new jobs for local people.

Tesco's .com launched in 1998 and has delivered since "a whopping 170 million grocery orders around the UK" as online grocery shopping continues to rise in popularity and with the growth of smartphones rapidly accelerating the trend.

Tesco customers placed over 3 million online grocery orders over Christmas - an increase of 11%, with one third placed on a mobile device.

Simon Belsham, Tesco.com Managing Director said, Tesco believes that everyone should benefit from the best possible service wherever they live, including the convenience of ordering their groceries online.

He said "at Tesco, we have been able to use unique assets of a nationwide stores and distribution network to create an online service for customers on [ Isle of ] Lewis."

"We’ll continue to work hard on the services we provide to these harder to reach communities and are already looking at developing a Click & Collect grocery service on the Isle of Skye later this year”, he promised.

At Stornoway, Store Manager, Kevin Poke said “We’re really excited to be offering this new service. Lots of customers have told us that it’s going to make their weekly shop a lot more convenient, because they can have their groceries delivered at a time that suits them.”

Deliveries will run from Tuesday to Saturday between 9am and 11pm.
