All requests for setting up a Momorial in honour of Lee Rigby should be made through the Army, the Royal Borough of Greenwich has directed.
In an official statement released on the Council website on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 the Royal Borough acknowledged the many enquiries being made, by both individuals and organisations, since the soldier's tragic death.
The statement said while "some of these appear to be designed to promote themselves or their own organisations, others are no doubt well meaning".
The statement said from the outset "the Council has determined to work with and through the Army which Lee loved and through which he served his country and gave his life."
And "given the Army's historic role in the history of our town, it does not make sense to do otherwise."
It said, as "the Army has been our link to Lee's family,.. we will continue to work through and with them in managing this still painful and raw matter."
"We will consider requests through the Army, but we would expect the Army to be the first call for those wishing to create memorials", Council said.
Lee Rigby was attacked and brutally murdered on Wellington Street, Woolwich on Wednesday May 22nd, 2013 by 29 year old Michael Adebolajo, from Romford, east London and 22 year old Michael Adewale, from Greenwich, south-east London.
The two were, last month, convicted for the killing and are awaiting sentencing, even though, as confirmed by the Judicial Office today, Michael Adebolajo has lodged an application to appeal against his conviction.
