Israel remembered victims of the horrendous killing of 6 million Jews by Adolf Hiter's troups as the Holocaust Day on Monday 28th April, 2014.
It was a in which the nation stood still for a 2 minute silence after sirens were sounded across the country before the nation-wide that marked the day.
This year's event has been remarkable in a unique way, with Mammoud Abass, President of the Palestinian Authority acknowledging on Sunday that the Holocaust was “the most heinous crime”.
Abbas statement, though a strong remark on the Nazi genocide, has however caused resentment as some doubt his sincerity, especially in the light of his recent move during which he reconciled the Palestinian Authority with Hamas - a group that Israel considers a terrorist organiation.
Expectedly, PM Netanyahu has rejected the statement. According the Times of Israel, Netanyahu "claims Abbas’s new unity partner, Hamas, is ‘trying to achieve another Holocaust’."
Netanyahu said that the Palestinian leader “last week chose to forge a pact with Hamas… a terror organization that calls for the destruction of Israel and denies the Holocaust.” ToI reports, adding that
the PM accuses Hamas, of “attempts to achieve another Holocaust through the destruction of the State of Israel.”
The two minute silence was widely observed and PM Netanyahu and other former Israeli leaders used the occasion to pay their respects to the victims as they laid a wreath at the Holocaust Museum.
Elsewhere all over the country, Israeli's stood still as they silence was observed.

The doubt over Mamoud Abbas statement was anchored on his 1982 doctoral dissertation titled “The Other Side: the Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism,” for which he has in the past, been accused of denying the scope of the Holocaust, ToI said, adding that Abbas "..dissertation reportedly claimed that the six million figure of Holocaust victims was hugely exaggerated and that Zionist leaders cooperated with the Nazis."
