Preliminary results from Egypt's 2014 presidential election has put former military strongman, Marshal Abdel Fattah El-sisi, in convince lead.
Lates vote count by Egyts governorate early this morning put El-Sisi on 96.92% with 23,851,364 votes, ahead of his closest rival, Hamdeen Sabahi on 3.074% with 756,619 votes.
El-Sisi who was Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, as well as Minister of Defence, from 12 August 2012 until 26 March 2014, when he stepped down to vie for the presidency
He played the leading role in ousting Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, following the outbreak of mass protests against him and his government, and outlawed his Muslim Brotherhood Party, many members of whom were recently condemned to death by a Cauro court for their part in the riots.
He is very active on social networks, travelled around to secure the support of world leaders and spoke passionately to Egyptians through a video posted online, before confirming, on 26 March 2014, that he would run for president in the coming election.
According to Egypt's Ahramonline newspaper "Unofficial results from Egypt's 27 governorates favour Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi with over 95 percent of the vote," adding "Although results will be confirmed next week, it is certain that ex-army chief has defeated rival Hamdeen Sabahi".
But the paper said the surprise in the race was the number of votes invalidated which exceeded
1 million votes.
The number of invalidated votes prompted Egyptians to joke on social media that Sabahi and the spoilt ballots were competing for second place in the election, the paper said.
The final results will be confirmed next week.
