This photo of a street in Homs, Syria is symbolic of the destruction noticeable in various parts of the country following a three year war in which a record 150,000 have reportedly died.
Many millions have also been driven abroad as refugees - a displacement that offers as yet no sign of ending with the warring parties not willing to end the hostilities.
Hopefully the reported deal for the Syria rebels to withdraw from Homs bastion will hold and there can be a semblance of peace, even if return to normalcy is not yet in sight.
Britain has committed over £600 million in aid to the displaced people of syria, just as many other countries have responded as much as they can.
According to media reports credited to AFP, the Syrian government and rebels struck a deal Friday for opposition fighters to withdraw from their besieged strongholds in the city of Homs, in another military success for the regime.
"The accord will mean all but one district of the city in central Syria, once dubbed the “capital of the revolution”, will be back under government control in the runup to elections," the daily Daily News Egypt said.
A ceasefire took effect in the Old City in Homs and several rebel-held districts to allow the withdrawal of almost 1,200 fighters, DNE reports quoting Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
“A truce began on Friday… with the goal of applying a deal reached between the sides,” the Britain-based monitoring group said.“The deal stipulates a ceasefire and the withdrawal of the rebels in the Old City,” which has been under siege for two years, DNE said.
It is so good a news and hopefully, similar accords will be achieved for other neighbourhoods as well.
