by Benson Agoha

Transport for London is to stop accepting cash on its buses this weekend.

The measures, which take effect from Sunday, 6th July, is currently being announced on tfl buses around the capital.

* 99% of passengers now make their journeys with Oyster Card and other methods of payment - (tfl).

'Paying with Oyster or a contactless payment card is not only the cheapest option, but also speeds up boarding times at bus stops and reduces delays" says Managing Director for TfL's Surface Transport, Leon Daniels.

Passengers intending to make their journeys on Tfl's buses will be required to pay either through their Oyster or bank Cards, as the contactless technology is put to wider use.

The decision to withraw cash faire payments, followed a public consultation which ran from 19 August until 11 October 2013. It attracted over 37,000 responses.

It showed that 99% of bus passengers already pay for their journeys using Oyster, prepaid tickets, contactless payment cards or concessionary tickets.

"We have made a decision to go ahead with a cashless fare system on London’s buses from summer this year," the report said.

Further information on other ways to pay can be obtained from www.tfl.com.
