Woolwich: Marks And Spencer Prepares For Final Exit

by WO Staff

Despite actions of petitioners and supporters of the Woolwich Branch of Marks And Spencer, the store is preparing for final exit from the Town Centre.
* Marks & Spencer, Woolwich will be finally closed on
Saturday, September 27, 2014.
On Monday June 9, 2014, we revealed how people opposed to the closure had signed an online petition to stop Marks and Spencer from going ahead with their planned closure. 455 persons signed the petition to save the 101 year-old store.

Even the intervention of the local Council was said to have failed to persuade the management from going ahead with the plan.

In furtherance of the decision, the store is currently doing a massive clearance sale in preparation to the final exit of 27 September, 2014.

Placing ran in-store notice, Marks and Spencer said the Woolwich store "..is closing on Saturday 27th, September, 2014."

The notice said "You will now find your nearest Outlet store at Thurrock", adding, "Your nearest main store is at Bexleyheath."

Marks and Spencer then thanked the customers for "shopping with us", saying "we look forward to seeing you in another of our stores soon."

The Branch Manager confirmed the closure but refused to comment further. Instead he directed us to the Corporate Media Office. At the time of going to press, efforts to contact them have not been successful.

Notwithstanding, a staff told Woolwich Online that no member of staff is being adversely affected by the closure and that some staff have already been transfered to other stores, while others are looking to be reassigned soon.

At the same time, an exchange programme is available in-store for customers to trade-in clothes that will then be donated to the Charity Oxfam.  So just ask when you go in.
