Woolwich: Petitioner Campaigns For Re-zoning of Woolwich Arsenal

by WO Staff

An online campaign to rezone Woolwich Arsenal is gaining ground by the day.

* Petitioner: Adam Clark.
Adam Clark (pictured) started a petition with Change.Org five days ago in which he campaigned for Woolwich Arsenal to be moved to Zone 3.

The petition, directed to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, urged him to consider the move in light of similar plans for Stratford(currently in zone 3) and Battersea (currently in zone 2). Just as Gallions Reach, just north of the river, and further east than Woolwich, is already in zone 3.

The petitioner said the imminent opening of Crossrail and the increasing regeneration of Woolwich Arsenal are added fillips, just as the number of commuters from the area is growing.

“Moving Woolwich Arsenal station from 4 to zone 3 will help make Woolwich even more attractive and slightly less expensive for workers commuting west.”

The petition has attracted 475 supports and is looking for 25 more, while 250 people have signed it, sighting various reasons.

Jenna Backwell, who commutes from the area said she supports the petition because she hopes to benefit from savings to her monthly costs.

John Hughes said he supports the idea because it would help commuters travelling into the city and also logical when looking at nearby stations.

Another supporter, Caroline Cook, said it will encourage investment in the local area if implemented.

Steven Penley who supported from Australia said Woolwich is close to the Central Business District and as a result, it is a logical next step to link ticket charges in line with the new crossrail system that makes Woolwich a transport hub. “Please stop disadvantaging people south of the Thames”, he urged.
