by Benson Agoha

The Crossrail Woolwich Station project is progressing according to information released by Crossrail on thier website.

The contract for the fit-out of the station in Woolwich was awarded in March to Balfour Beatty Group Limited. The contract worth £70m, covers the fit-out of the two portals at North Woolwich and Plumstead - at either end of the Thames Tunnel where Crossrail trains will surface, according to official information from Crossrail.

Since Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT), joint sponsors of the Crossrail, confirmed that Crossrail services will call at Woolwich (which was originally not provided for in the initial design, residents of Woolwich are looking forward to the benefits the Crossrail will add to their transport needs.

For example a train journey to Canary Wharf will take just 8 mins, saving them 11 minutes. A journey to Bond Street will take 22 minutes from Woolwich instead of 37 minutes (a savings of 15 mins), while a travelers to Heathrow airport will spend only 50 minutes instead of 1hr 28mins (meaning a savings of 38 minutes).

The provision for a Woolwich Station by Crossrail is already helping to transform Woolwich. It is also influencing the way Town Centre planners are working to enhance regeneration.

When Crossrail begins in 2018, up to 12 services an hour will allow passengers to travel to Canary Wharf, the City and the West End without having to change trains. This means a reduction in journey times. Plus, it will create new transport links for local people from Woolwich.
