Tesco to donate unsold food to people in need

The days would soon be long gone when Tesco would allow unsold food to go to waste. This is because the Grocer has announced `ground breaking new scheme' that will see all unsold Tesco food go to people in need.

In a Press release made available to Woolwich Online, Tesco said this new scheme will be called FareShare FoodCloud and will be piloted in Tesco stores to give unsold food to charities and not to waste.

Tesco, which recently took a man to court for rummaging through it's bins looking for waste food to feed his family (as reported in a National daily - not Woolwich Online), said the new scheme comes after new figures revealed it wasted 55,400 tonnes of food within its operations in the last year alone, out of which about 30,000 tonnes could otherwise have been eaten.

Tesco CEO Dave Lewis, said of the new scheme: “No one wants to throw away food which could otherwise be eaten," adding “We don’t throw away much food in our own operations but even the 1% we do throw away amounts to 55,400 tonnes."

“To reduce this amount even further, we’ll be working in partnership with FareShare FoodCloud to ensure any food left unsold in our stores at the end of each day is given to local charities."

“This is potentially the biggest single step we’ve taken to cut food waste, and we hope it marks the start of eliminating the need to throw away edible food in our stores.”
