Woolwich: Armed Forces Day Flag raised in Royal Greenwich

The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr. Norman Adams was joined by Borough Leader, Cllr Denise Hyland and other senior council officials and guests, to raise the Flag at the start of the Armed Forces Veteran's Week, in Woolwich on Monday 22nd June, 2015.

There were also serving members of the British armed forces and the Royal British Legion from Eltham and Thamesmead and Abbeywood chapters. And members of the King's Troop helped to raise the flag outside the Town Hall.

Monday's event, marks the start of the Veteran's week, and will culminate in a parade and stunt displays at the Armed Forces remembrance Day on Saturday, the 27th of June, 2015.

Also in attendance at the Flag raising and breakfast event were the Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr. Olu Babatola and many other dignitaries representing Royal Greenwich, The British Army, Royal Navy, The Kings Troop and Outreach London.

Lt. Col. Bob Christopher of the Royal Artillery Baracks, Woolwich and his assistant Major Gerry Porter led a team of soldiers from the Woolwich Baracks.

Represented as well at the event, were two separate teams from the Royal British Legion, Eltham, Royal British Legion - Thamesmead and Abbeywood, the Naval Regional Command (Eastern England, HSM President) based at Tower Hamlets. Present as were The King's Troop and Outreach London.

Children were also not left out as pupils of Mulgrave Primary School, Woolwich attended the event.

In his speech, Mayor of Royal Greenwich, Cllr. Norman Adams welcomed the guests to the formal raising of the flag for the Armed Forces saying it marked the start of the Armed Forces Week and which helps to raise awareness of Armed Forces Day which will be held on Saturday 27th June, 2015.

The Mayor said the annual opportunity was an opportunity for the national and the borough to show support. He said "We are here to demonstrated the Borough's strong commitment to our armed forces and the appreciation we have for all that they do", adding " We are immensely proud of our strong connection with the armed forces and veteran associations.  The boroughs has a long standing military history and we recognise and honour all who serve and served."

The Mayor said the event also had a special significance as we continue to commemorate the centenary of the first world war, as well as commemorating, last month, the 70th anniversary of the VE day.

"At this time, it is only fitting that we share our gratitude for the contribution and sacrifices of the armed forces community and all they do to protect and serve this country," the Mayor said.

In his short speech, Lt Col Bob Christopher of the Royal Artillery Baracks, Woolwich said the British armed forces will continue to carry out the work of defending our nation and will always work to maintain, not just the links it has with the civil society, but also it's links with the Royal Greenwich.

Later Deputy Mayor, Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Olu Babatola, told Woolwich Online that he was delighted to give his strong support for the Armed Forces Day event and he hoped the community cohesion will continue for the benefit of the borough.

The Mayor, Cllr Norman Adams invited guests outside the Town Hall where members of the King's Troop raised the Armed Forces Day Flag, which carried a special message, urging everyone to "Show Your Support".

Guests were treated to breakfast and refreshments as the pupils of Mulgrave Primary School, Woolwich sang for the Mayor.
