Royal Greenwich Citizens Invited To Get Active at Disability Event

An activity day in Hornfair Park next month offers a free day of fun for local people, with equipment and support to ensure that people with disabilities and long-term health conditions can join in.

The Greenwich Get Active Disability Event is returning for a second year to showcase the range of activities available in the borough for everyone – particularly disabled children and adults.

The event, which runs from 12-4pm at Hornfair Park, Charlton, on Sunday 9 August, includes physical activities for everyone but also ensures those with a range of disabilities, including sight or hearing impairment, physical disabilities, limited mobility, autism, learning disabilities and long-term health conditions can join in, and all necessary equipment is provided.

Greenwich Get Active is the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s activity programme that promotes a wide range of opportunities for people to take part in physical activity. The programme, run by Charlton Athletic Community Trust on the Royal Borough’s behalf, offers over 1000 activities around Greenwich run by 80 local organisations.

Activities at Hornfair Park will include wheelchair tennis, judo, seated exercise, fitness challenges, short tennis, BMX, football, boccia, new age curling, adapted rowing, accessible cycling and seated volleyball.

Special guests Ben Quilter, a judo Bronze Medallist and wheelchair rugby Paralympian Andy Barrow, will be there on the day to answer questions about disability specific activities.

The Greenwich Change4Life Summer Roadshow will also be there showing fun, family activities and letting families know how easy it is to eat better and move more.

Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing and Public Health said: “The event is a great way to help everyone in the borough get active over the summer – as well as promoting sports for disabled children and adults with a wide range of different disabilities."

She said: "With so many activities on offer, everyone will get a chance to try something new and to have fun doing it.”
