Nearby, Berkeley Homes’ Royal Arsenal development will see the launch of a monthly farmers’ market, focusing on quality, artisan food produced in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The Summer Feast in General Gordon Square aims to celebrate some of the borough’s food businesses and projects while offering a chance to enjoy a variety of global music performers.
It will allow local people to find out about some of the projects taking part in the Good Food in Greenwich initiative – an open partnership that brings together local organisations who share a commitment to building a fairer, healthier and more sustainable Greenwich.
Community growing schemes will be offering some of their produce, while local cookery clubs will be sharing tips and recipes. Local traders due to take part include Greenwich Pantry, Made in Greenwich, Organic Greenwich, Casa Grande, Carib-Gourmet, The Honest Loaf and Viet Baguette.
The event also features the Greenwich Change 4 Life Summer Roadshow which will be touring the borough offering support and advice to local families on how to make healthy changes to their lifestyle.
Music performers supplied by Global Fusion Arts will include Caribbean Steel Pan Jazz, Ghanaian High-life roots music and Congolese Rumba.
Local residents and businesses will have a chance sign up to the Good Food in Greenwich initiative, with a pledge to change or improve their approach to food in the coming year. This could include deciding to get involved in a growing project, or pledging to shop from local farmer’s market.
Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing and Public Health, said: “There are some very exciting projects across the borough that are promoting good food. In particular we want to promote the idea that the food we buy and eat can make a positive contribution to our own health, and to the well-being of the local community and of the planet. The Summer Feast is a great chance to find out what’s going on and we hope to offer even more inspiration to local people on how to get involved in creating Good Food in Greenwich.”
Terry Powley, Chair of Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency, said: “As chair of Good Food in Greenwich, I am delighted that we are having our first Summer network event in General Gordon Square. Good Food in Greenwich is about making the borough fairer, healthier and more sustainable, and we want to use this opportunity to involve as many people as possible in working together to achieve this. It will be an exciting day with music, food and fun and we look forward to seeing everyone there.”
