Royal Greenwich Tells Eltham Residents To Help Shape Future Of Eltham Town Centre

The people of Eltham are being asked to feed in their comments on a major improvement scheme planned for the town centre, aimed at making it more attractive, appealing and user-friendly for both locals and visitors alike.

Proposals for the High Street include wholesale changes, with wider and smarter pavements, different parking arrangements, much improved crossing points, relocation of bus stops and the resurfacing of the entire road – to make for a more attractive and even safer environment for shoppers and visitors. 

There will be new trees, planted areas and sitting out places to create a ‘street garden’ look along with better street lighting, way-finding signage and new cycle lanes.

The improvements take in the whole High Street area and include the Well Hall Road junction, Passey Place, the Footscray Road Junction. It takes in the shops and many of the passageways and the main local amenities like the Eltham Centre, St Mary’s Community Centre and the site of the proposed new cinema.

Eltham Town Centre is one of the Council’s identified growth areas – it has a masterplan which sets out the Council’s vision for the future of the town centre, delivering improvements that will filter out to the whole borough. The scheme will see more than £5million of investment by the Council - chiefly using funds secured from Transport for London following a successful bidding process.

The aim is to support the local economy and local businesses and to raise the town centre’s profile even further making it a place that even more people want to visit.

The Council is eager to hear what local people think of the proposals and is encouraging everyone to respond to the consultation and visit an exhibition at the Eltham Centre.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, the royal borough’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: “These plans outline exciting changes for Eltham. Already a bustling town centre, we want to build on its success even further and work on the High Street area to make it an even more attractive and user-friendly environment, that works for local shoppers and encourages even more spend in our local businesses. We really want to people of Eltham to feed in their comments and help us to shape these really important plans that will ultimately deliver wholesale changes and improvements.”
