Local People From Royal Greenwich Got Active At Disability Event

More than 150 people enjoyed a free activity day yesterday (9 August), with equipment and support to ensure that people with disabilities and long-term health conditions can join in.

The Greenwich Get Active Disability Event, held in Hornfair Park, Charlton, was taking place for its second year to showcase the range of activities available in the borough for everyone – particularly disabled children and adults.

The event included physical activities for everyone and particularly ensured that those with a range of disabilities, including sight or hearing impairment, physical disabilities, limited mobility, autism, learning disabilities and long-term health conditions could join in, with all necessary equipment provided.

Activities on offer included wheelchair tennis, judo, seated exercise, fitness challenges, short tennis, BMX, football, boccia, new age curling, adapted rowing, accessible cycling and seated volleyball.

Special guests included Ben Quilter, a judo Bronze Medallist and wheelchair rugby Paralympian Andy Barrow. The Greenwich Change4Life Summer Roadshow was also there showing fun, family activities and letting families know how easy it is to eat better and move more.

Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing and Public Health, said: “This was a great day, with a really relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It offered an excellent chance for people to try out new activities and it was clear that everyone there – young and old - had an enjoyable time."

“A key aim of the event is to signpost people towards the physical activity and sporting opportunities that are available in the borough throughout the year, and I know that many, many people came away from Sunday’s event with greater knowledge of the opportunities that are available, and the support that exists in the borough to enable people to take part."

“To have the Change for Life Roadshow running alongside the activity day was a welcome addition this year and a real attraction on the day.”
