Royal Greenwich Parents Take Step Towards Road To Employment

Proud parents who’ve completed training to improve their English, maths and IT have received accolades – and a certificate – at a ceremony in Woolwich.

The training, known as Functional Skills, specializes in helping parent learners to improve their English, maths and IT skills. It is also designed to help participants become more confident and independent, helping get them a job, or another college course or training programme – all while fulfilling childcare commitments.

An event at the Woolwich Centre last week (27 July) marked the successful completion of the classes for 50 parent learners.

Cllr Sizwe James, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Business, Employment & Skills, attended to offer congratulations and present them with certificates. With this stage of training complete they will now be able to progress to the next level, setting them on the road to gaining a qualification equivalent to a GCSE in Maths and English.

Twelve of the borough’s 24 children’s centres offer the training, with a free crèche available to make it easier for parents to take part.

Cllr James said: “Congratulations to the parents who worked hard to complete this training. The valuable skills they have developed will really aid them in the future and could lead to employment opportunities."

“The Council is committed to helping parents develop their careers in this way going into the future. The fact that this training has been delivered through our children’s centres is very positive – It means that it is much easier and more accessible for parents with young children to undertake this valuable training.”
