More details have been released about the borough’s next Tall Ships festival, due to take place in 2017.
The event will be held over four days, beginning Thursday, April 13, 2017, which is the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
A fleet of up to 50 Tall Ships is due to take part, starting from Royal Greenwich to cross the North Atlantic to the USA, and visiting ports in Canada before arriving in Quebec City in July. It will mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.
The festival will build on the success of the 2014 Tall Ships Festival in the borough, which attracted more than a million visitors and gave a massive boost to the local economy.
An independent report said it generated more than £17 million to the area, and was highly regarded by residents, visitors and businesses alike.
It was London’s first major Tall Ships Festival for 25 years, and created opportunities for local people in volunteering, sailing and performing in the cultural events.
The report also concluded that 84 per cent of business agreed it was a good thing for Royal Greenwich.
Even more, 94 per cent of people quizzed, agreed it was good for promoting Woolwich as a place to visit. And 95 per cent of people surveyed said it made them likely to pay another visit to the borough.

The Greenwich Ship Tier close to the Cutty Sark has been booked for the 2017 event, and will be used to moor up to two larger tall ships. The Port of London Authority is working on a mooring plan for central Greenwich that will enable more ships to be put on temporary moorings along the Greenwich waterfront from the Old Royal Naval College to Deptford.
It is also proposed to extend the festival site along the newly-developed Thames Path at Greenwich Reach to create a ships viewing area. The council’s cabinet was given an update on how plans were progressing, when members met on July 22.
Councillor Miranda Williams, Cabinet member for Culture and Creative industries, said: “The last Tall Ships Festival was truly thrilling, and put Royal Greenwich firmly on the map for the many thousands of visitors who came here. The 2017 event promises to be even better, and something that no local person should allow themselves to miss.”
Residents can book a cruise on a tall ship during the 2015 event of the Greenwich Tall Ships Festival, which takes place between August 27-31.
There’ll be entertainment, fireworks and daily trips and 15 tall ships will be on display.
