Royal Greenwich Starts Rollout Of New Pay And Display Parking Machines

by our RBG Correspondent | Greenwich

New pay and display machines are being installed in parts of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to help make parking easier for shoppers and businesses.

The first machines have just been installed in all council-run car parks and around Woolwich Town Centre, replacing the old-style lollypop meters.The next phase will see the new-style machines replacing lollypop meters in Greenwich, towards the end of autumn.

The new meters bring a range of benefits, including:

* Reduced street clutter:- one pay and display machine can replace many old-style lollypop machines;
* Increased on-street parking capacity:- individually marked bays aren’t necessary for the new-style machines;
* Increased service reliability:– the old meters were increasingly unreliable;
* An increased range of coins will be accepted by the new machines;

The new pay and display machines have enhanced software, enabling any issues to be flagged and resolved more quickly.

The project involves work by trainees on the council’s HILL scheme, which places local young people with council contractors and provides them with valuable access to employment, skills and training.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Transport (top), said: “This is good news for residents and people visiting and shopping in the Royal Borough."

"The new pay and display machines will make it easier for people to park near shops and businesses when visiting our town centres. The increased parking capacity is better for local businesses, especially as many will be gearing up for the Christmas shopping season shortly."

“I am also delighted that the project has enabled local young people on our HILL scheme to gain additional and valuable work experience.”

Thank You!
