by Benson Agoha |

Shoppers be aware, Tesco has formerly announced, Tuesday that come October 5, 2015, it is to introduce charges for its plastic bags. And money raised from the introduction will be given to good causes, Tesco said.
* Not so free: Tesco Bag: soon to attract a charge.

Tips to Tesco customers include the importance of making sure they have a bag stashed in their car boots, as well as "techniques for folding bags extra small so they can fit in a purse or handbag."

It means you either bring your shopping bag from home or be ready to pay charges that range from 5p a bag.

It is suspected that different sizes and strength of bags will be introduced. The introduction has been creeping up on shoppers for awhile.

In the past few weeks, notices have been placed at strategic points in-store and on check-outs about the change in policy.

The introduction is for England only as customers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already pay a bag charge. And from their experience, Tesco said it expects a drop in bag as a result.

But there is a small reprieve, because a limited number of free Bags for Life will be at the till during the week before the charge comes into force.

Rebecca Shelley, Group Communications Director for Tesco said: “It’s incredibly important we do our bit for the environment and we’re really proud of the work we’ve done in this area, particularly in reducing waste."

“We want to do everything we can to help our customers minimise the impact of the charge as well as their impact on the environment, by helping them recycle and re-use their bags.

“We’re also going to work together with our customers to make sure the millions that will be raised from the bag charge goes towards making a real difference for our local communities.”
