Toyota Leads, VW Follows In Global Auto Sales - With Three Quarters Of Year Gone

Toyota leads Volkswagen, 7.49 million total vehicles sold this year to 7.43 million, with three months to go in a race that could remain too close to call until late December.

As if the fuel cheating scandal is not enough, it's more bad news for Germany's Volks Wagen, after latest reports say Toyota vehicles are out-selling VW's.

With three quarters of the year gone and only one quarter yet to go, figures show that Toyota's sales is now marginally ahead. And the scandal was only a month ago.

As VW prepares to start massive recall of 11 million vehicles from January, it will worry about the new report which put it behind Toyota for the first time in four years.

According to the Industry Week report, from January to September, Toyota sold more than 7.49 million vehicles, including those from subsidiaries Daihatsu and truckmaker Hino, while VW sold 7.43 million for the same period.

Germany has been on the wrong side of the news since the revelation that it had evaded U.S emission limits by equipping its vehicles with a software that makes detection difficult.

The revelation has led to the immediate departure of its former Chief Executive Officer and the new CEO has said painful decisions are going to have to be made.

German authorities, are also pursuing investigation against VW, with its headquarters and residence of top executives searched.

Of Toyota's entire sales, some 5.85 million was made outside of Japan. Toyota also gained sales from China with an 11.6% boost amounting to 804,000 units. It sold 2.02 million or 4% higher in North America.
