Daniel Sturridge and Jonnie Peacock Launch Sainsbury's Latest Sports Scheme

Daniel Sturridge and Jonnie Peacock came together in Liverpool to launch Sainsbury's new sports initiative - The Active Kids Paralympic Challenge.

The Active Kids initiative is a sports scheme aimed at getting more young people involved in inclusive sports and raise awareness of Paralympic sport ahead of the Rio 2016 Games.

The aim of the scheme, Sainsbury's explained is to get get 2.5 million young people involved in Paralympic sport before Rio 2016.

The scheme aims to expose the children to sports including boccia, goalball, sitting volleyball and athletics. Participating Schools are offered the opportunity to win money can’t buy prizes, including a trip to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Daniel Sturridge, who plays for Liverpool FC and the England National Team spoke of the benefits of sports to him, saying it has helped him in all areas of his life and providing young people with equal opportunities to get involved in sport is really important and hopes that teachers across the country will encourage students to participate in the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Paralympic Challenge.

Paralympian Jonnie Peacock, who won Gold at the 2012 Summer Paralympics told of his experience saying: "At school, I had to quickly learn to fit in around the sports on offer. But for children with an impairment today, through Active Kids Paralympic Challenge, things should be easier - you can have all kids playing the same games and it’s a fun way to learn more about Paralympic sport.”

Ali Oliver, Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive said: “Sainsbury’s Active Kids Paralympic Challenge aims to increase awareness, and challenge perceptions of disability among young people."
