48 Nigerians were deported from the United Kingdom on Tuesday, not 500 as many Nigerian media reported on Wednesday. And they were removed because they have no right to stay in the country.
The clarification was made by the Home Office through UK-In-Nigeria - The Agency that represents the British High Commission in Nigeria.
In a bid to stop the rumours, the UK-In-Nigeria said contrary to the many stories in Nigerian press today about enforced returns from UK to Nigeria.
According to the Home Office spokesperson: "Those with no right to be in the UK should return home. We expect people to leave the country voluntarily.." adding "..but, where they do not, Immigration Enforcement will seek to enforce their departure. NIS confirms 48 returned not 500 as speculated."
Many bloggers in Nigeria either replicated the stories or help share stories about the removals, which was carried out through a flight run by Titan Airways from The Stansted Airport.
Some of the stories was that the UK plans to deport some 29,000 Nigerians. This was not mentioned by the UK Home office in its statement.
