Royal Greenwich To Extend ‘No parking’ Zone

The big clampdown on people who park their cars and vans on grassed areas at council-owned land in Abbey Wood has paid off.

Since the fixed penalty notice signs were put up on October 7, the number of illegal parkers on the grassed area has gone down to a trickle.

But the problem has not gone away – just moved. Thoughtless drivers are now parking further away, outside the notices zone.

As a result, the council has now decided to extend the enforcement zone.

By the end of the month, penalties will be issued to anyone parking on grassed areas in Cookhill Road, Panfield Road, Felixstowe Road and Combewell Crescent.

The council decided to take action against bad parkers following complaints from residents that vehicles were churning up the grass and stopping children from playing.

The notices warn that parking is not allowed, and anyone who does will get a £60 penalty. If that is not paid within 14 days, the penalty rises to £100.

And if that is still not paid, drivers will be taken to court. The ‘no parking’ action is being enforced by Wing Parking, a firm employed by the council.

Councillor Chris Kirby, The Royal Borough of Greenwich cabinet member for Housing said: “We thought we were getting this parking problem under control, but it has simply relocated itself. So we now have to take further action. This is a big issue for residents at Abbey Wood."

"People get very annoyed when drivers park on the grassed communal areas outside the housing blocks. What they are doing is anti-social, and we are determined to do something about it, and hit the people who do it hard in their pockets.”
