Royal Greenwich Urges Parents To Apply For A Primary Place Soon

by our RGB Correspondent | Woolwich

Parents whose children are due to start primary school next September are being urged not to leave it too late to apply.

The Royal Borough is reminding parents that getting a place at primary school is not an automatic process – and they must apply for a place for their child. The deadline for completing the application form is 15 January 2016, but parents can apply any time between now and that date.

For local parents, there has never been a better time to go to school in Royal Greenwich. Key Stage Two results continue to improve year-on-year, putting Royal Greenwich right up among the top performing 25% of local authorities in England.

Children in Royal Greenwich primary schools make more progress and achieve better than most children across London and the rest of the country, with 94 per cent of the borough’s primaries now rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

Cllr John Fahy (top right), the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Parents will see from the excellent achievement of our children just how effective our schools are in helping children fulfil their potential."

“Our high expectations rest on great teaching and great leadership. Primary schools are also at the heart of our communities and their success owes a great deal to the support and participation of parents."

“Remember - you will not be offered a place for your child next September unless you apply. Don’t miss out.”

Evidence that Royal Greenwich primary schools are among the best in the country at helping pupils to make progress includes:

- In national tests for reading, 92% of Greenwich 11 year olds achieved the expected level (Level 4 and better) compared with the national average of 89%.

- In writing, 90% of Greenwich pupils reached the expected level – three percentage points above the national rate.

- In maths Greenwich pupils’ achievement was four percentage points higher than national at 91%.

- The rate of pupils achieving the expected level in reading, writing and maths was 86% - six points above the national average, making Greenwich joint fourth in the country.

- In assessments for 7 year olds, 91% of Greenwich pupils achieved the expected level (Level 2 and better) in reading; the figure was 89% in writing and 94% in maths. Ofsted now judge 94% of Greenwich primary schools as good or outstanding – the ninth best in England.
