Tfl To Migrate Stratford and Nearby Stations To Zones Two And Three For 2016

by Benson Agoha | Transport

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has approved the proposal to rezone Stratford Station East London, from Zone 3 to 2/3, as announced Friday morning by the Greater London Authority. The new zone takes from 2nd January, 2016.

* Stratford station will move to Zone 2 in 2016.
But there is no change for Woolwich as a popular petition, backed by the Greenwich Council to rezone Woolwich Arsenal from Zone 4 to zone 3 was rejected by the Mayor in October 2014 on the grounds of loss of revenue.

Today's announcement said the purpose of rezoning of Stratford was to make it easier for people transiting to Zone 2 or 1 when they arrive.

Other stations that are being rezoned along with Stratford include "Stratford, Stratford High Street, Stratford International DLR station, West Ham and Canning Town, Star Lane and Abbey Road."

"This means if you arrive into these stations from Zone 3 or higher, it'll charge you the fare as if you're in Zone 3 and if you arrive from Zones 1 or 2, it'll charge you a journey as if you've arrived at Zone 2." the statement said.

The changes, which have been agreed with the Train Companies and the DfT will benefit some 105,000 customers per week Tfl said.

Tfl allowed the rezoning even though it will result in a fares revenue loss of around £8m per year, including £1m for the rezoning of the adjacent stations.

Generaly fares for travel on Transport for London (TfL) services will rise 1% next year— in line with the retail price index measure of inflation.

But Children under 11 will be able to travel free on all National Rail services in the capital under an extension welcomed by Jon-Rhys Foster, chair at the British Youth Council, who said it will help those families struggling with the cost of living in London.
