Industry Week — Apple announced Thursday, the appointment of Jeff Williams(right) as the new Chief Operating Officer, after four years.

The Tech giant with the title of most valuable firm has been operating without a chief operation officer after incumbent CEO, Tim Cook, who served as Apple’s COO from 2007 to 2011, was moved from the position August 24, 2011, following Steve Jobs declining health. The Apple founder died six weeks later.

According to the Industry Week, Williams was already handling the role and the announcement was a formality.

He is reputed to have "played a key role in Apple's entry into the mobile phone market with the launch of the iPhone."

Speaking of the new COO, Apple CEO was quoted as saying "Jeff is hands-down the best operations executive I've ever worked with” adding "We are fortunate to have incredible depth and breadth of talent across Apple's executive team."

Since 2010, Williams’ duties have included overseeing Apple's supply chain along with service and support.

Other recent appointments at Apple also include Johny Srouji, the head of Apple's chip business, being named senior vice president for hardware technologies and Tor Myhren who will join Apple early next year as vice president of marketing communications, reporting to Cook.
