Thieves are opportunistic and they will take any chance they have to steal a purse, cash or a mobile phone.
Officers are asking the public to take a few simple measures to make thieves’ lives difficult and not let them get away with hard-earned cash, presents or mobile phone:
* if your bag has a zip or a clasp, keep it fastened when you're out and about;
* carry your Oyster card or travel ticket separately to avoid flashing your wallet or purse unnecessarily;
* always be aware of your surroundings, especially when using your phone in public;
* make sure your phone is locked with a PIN or code and install a tracker app in case it's stolen;
* plan your journey home in advance, use taxis (black cabs) or pre-booked mini-cabs.

PS Matt Burns (top left), Neighbourhood Sgt for Woolwich, said: "Christmas is historically a busy time in Woolwich Town Centre, Please be extra vigilant in busy places/shops, keep your personal belongings close to you and make sure all your bags are zipped up. The team will be on hand over the festive period with uniformed and plain clothes officers patrolling to deter shoplifters."
Chief Superintendent Helen Millichap, Greenwich Borough Commander, said: “Realising that you've had something stolen whether it is cash, a mobile or a present you had bought for a loved one can be distressing, costly and a big inconvenience."
"We want Christmas to be enjoyed by all visiting and living in Greenwich but we need your help to make thieves’ lives difficult - we don’t want them to get away with your belongings.”
She added; “Shopping and celebrating make up a big part of the festive fun therefore you may notice officers patrolling busy areas and providing a presence on the streets of the borough.”
Councillor Jackie Smith (top right), Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environment, said: “With a huge array of events, Royal Greenwich is the place to be at Christmas, whether that is to shop, see a show or to enjoy the decorations and festive cheer. Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a merry time for pickpockets. We are pleased that the police are proactively tackling this issue by increasing the number of officers on the street throughout the festive period. We want to attract people to enjoy Christmas in our borough and we are absolutely committed to keeping those visitors safe."
