Woolwich Starts Off With Its Christmas Celebrations In Style

by our RBG Correspondent | Woolwich

Saturday saw 1000s of residents go to Woolwich to begin celebrating Christmas with the Royal Borough’s annual Woolwich Winter Warmer, looking to attract shoppers to the town centre between now and Christmas.

Woolwich Winter Warmer is an annual event which takes place as part of Greenwich’s exciting programme of winter-themed community engagement events in the lead-up to Christmas.

Many local shops and restaurants had special offers last Saturday to all holders of the Greenwich One Card which residents of Greenwich can sign up to for FREE.

The lantern parade got underway in fabulous fashion with school children from schools within the area carrying their very own lantern. Local talented musicians entertained shoppers and included a school choir, hip hop, R&B and a remarkable pantomime with their stunning performance on the main stage.

Festive characters joined in the celebrations and entertained the children dressed as Christmas presents and elves, helping to big up the Christmas spirit in Woolwich.

The Christmas lights in Woolwich were turned on by local MP Matthew Pennycook and Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries & Community Wellbeing.

The Winter Warmer ended with a flourish as fireworks displays lit the skies of Woolwich to close off what proved to be a wonderful event in Greenwich.

Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries & Community Wellbeing said: “It was a great day at the Woolwich Winter Warmer as Christmas got underway in Woolwich. The entertainment and fireworks helped kick off the Christmas celebrations in spectacular fashion.”
