Twenty two new industrial units are to be built at Nathan Way industrial estate in Thamesmead after the go-ahead was given by the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The Council is making Royal Greenwich more competitive in economic terms, attracting investment and providing an environment that enables jobs to be created for local people. It is also supporting business growth in order to retain and develop existing businesses and encourage new ones into the borough.
The Council’s agreement to proceed with the Nathan Way scheme meets the demand for modern, high quality industrial space in the borough.
Nathan Way, in west Thamesmead, is an area with established and growing businesses and the scheme is part of the Royal Borough’s commitment to support local business and secure and generate new jobs through direct action.
The 22 new units will accommodate existing businesses in the Royal Borough that need to expand or relocate – particularly from regeneration areas – as well as new businesses looking to locate into the borough.
There is strong demand for industrial space within the Royal Borough, particularly from individuals wanting to start-up a business, as well as businesses seeking premises in the order of 500 to 2000 sq ft. Over 50% of business enquiries to the council are for industrial size units of the size to be provided at Nathan Way.
Transport links to the new estate will improve massively when Crossrail stations at Woolwich and Abbey Wood open in 2018.
Cllr Sizwe James (top right), Cabinet Member for Business and Skills, said: “The borough is going through an exciting period of regeneration and redevelopment. It is vital that we put in the facilities and infrastructure that will ensure our existing businesses can operate and flourish, and so that we continue to attract new businesses to the borough. The development of these new units means new jobs and apprenticeship opportunities, and income generation for our local economy. I look forward to seeing them open.”
In addition to creating new jobs at new units, there will also be approximately 95 jobs during the construction phase of the development, including 5 apprenticeships opportunities.

It is also estimated that this could safeguard in the order of 80 jobs in the borough and create over 50 additional direct jobs as a result of business growth and new business start-ups.
A number of indirect jobs will also be created through supply chain opportunities, where local businesses can tender to deliver contracts and services.

All opportunities will be promoted widely through the council's employment, skills and business brokerage services to Royal Borough residents.
