A fraudster has been jailed in Tower Hamlets after he used a stolen credit card to buy a bubbly champagne from a posh hotel in Canary Wharf. He shelled £375 off the account on that occasion.

In a statement released by the Metropolitan Police, Idris Ogunsanya, unemployed at the time defrauded scores of people out of thousands of pounds to enjoy luxury items and holidays.

The crook who lived the high life was said to have enjoyed a high-end lifestyle that included travelling extensively, usually in business class, and staying at hotels including the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai.

The 29 year old from Blackwall Way, E14, in the Isle of Dogs was jailed on Friday, February 19 by the Snaresbrook Crown Court, having been found guilty the same day of 10 counts of fraud or possession of articles used in fraud.

Police say he was arrested after using a stolen credit card to buy a £375 bottle of Dom Perignon champagne at The Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel in Canary Wharf on 1 November 2013.

"Officers from Tower Hamlets attended his address to arrest him for this matter. When they entered the property, the officers became suspicious because of items in the flat.

Ogunsanya was further arrested and officers seized a large number of stolen and blank credit cards, correspondence addressed to neighbours, some £6,000 in cash, a device for skimming card details from ATMs and a credit card reader.

Further goods seized including a 60 inch television, a quantity of champagne and several pairs of expensive and unworn trainers.

The subsequent investigation established that Ogunsanya had defrauded a number of people, including some of his neighbours, out of at a least £40,000.
