Festival of Learning – Find Out What’s On In Royal Borough Of Greenwich

The Festival of Learning starts in May and there’s no better time than now to learn a new skill in the Royal Borough.

Taking place over two months and led by the Learning & Work Institute, the Festival of Learning is a national celebration of lifelong learning designed to show how easy it is to gain qualifications and new skills.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich’s adult skills team has teamed up with the Greenwich Community Learning Champions to host an exciting programme of events to highlight the range of adult learning opportunities that residents can get involved in.

Whether you already love to learn, or would like to try something new, the Festival of Learning has something for you.

Adult education courses:
Greenwich Community College offers affordable adult education and a range of family learning courses. The college is hosting a wide range of courses and taster sessions during the Festival of Learning. Courses include hair and beauty tasters, ceramic workshops, lessons on cooking on a budget, and an introduction to using SAGE accounting software.

Enrolling is easy and can be done online at www.gcc.ac.uk/general-interest-courses, or call 020 8858 2211. You can also enrol in person at the Greenwich Park or Plumstead Centre (bring your Greenwich One Card or proof of benefits if applicable).

Arts and crafts:
View and buy artwork produced by students studying Greenwich Community College when they showcase their work at the GCC Creative Arts Festival on Saturday 18 June. Visitors to the event will also be able to try their hand at a new skill in one of the taster classes. Go to

Horticulture:
Green-fingered learners can new gardening skills at the borough’s Horticultural Skills Centre on Shooters Hill. The centre for horticulture has range of facilities where learners can study short courses, leisure courses and courses leading to accredited qualifications. During the Festival of Learning the centre will be running half-day taster sessions on green-keeping, production horticulture, soft landscaping and grounds, floristry, willow weaving and the food industry sector.

Equestrian skills:
As part of the Olympic legacy, the Royal Borough Greenwich Hadlow Equestrian Riding Centre was opened in 2013. Equipped with custom-built facilities, the Centre is offering a 10-week Introduction to course for residents for as little as £1 a session (for those on tested benefits).
 
There are one-day Horse Care courses offering practical experience and introduction to a range of skills, and a two-day Horse Husbandry & Welfare course for experienced riders.

Digital skills:
Upgrade your digital skills on a free one hour taster session at a taster day at Ravensbourne College on Saturday June 18 from 10am - 3pm, which includes sessions on web design, Photoshop, 3D modelling, social media and Styling Yourself for an Interview.

* Construction
Hospitality, retail and customer services:
Get a foot in the door in the hospitality, retail and customer services world with a range of courses offered by Community Systems during the Festival of Learning.

The World Host Customer Service courses include sessions on ‘Principles of Customer Service’ which takes place on Thursday 12 May from 9.30am - 4.30pm at the Work& Learn Centre, North Greenwich, SE10 0GE. ‘Service across Cultures’ takes place on Thursday 26 May from 9.30am - 4.30pm at the same venue.

A one-day course leading to a level 2 award in Food Safety is being held on Friday 20 May at the Work & Learn Centre from 9.30am - 4.30pm. This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills they need to work anywhere where food is prepared, cooked or handled.

Half term family activities at City Lit:
City Lit is running activities for adults and children during half term and after school during the Festival of Learning, which is hosting some taster workshops. These include sessions such as Family Gardening, Fun with Food, Creative Writing for Family Stories, Family Canoeing, and Stress Busting & Well Being for adults.

City Lit is also running accredited courses for adults at the Eltham Centre (Archery Road, Eltham, SE9 1HA) during the festival including L1 Certificate in Employability - a 6-week course running from Tuesday 3 May - Tuesday 7 June; L1 Hospitality Basics - a 6-week course starting in May.

Construction Skills taster sessions:
Flower Skills Construction in Charlton is offering a three-week ‘Construction Skills Taster’ giving learners a flavour of work in the construction industry. It’s free for unemployed adults aged 19+ and runs 9 - 27 May and 6 – 24 June.
 
The Skills2Construction programme is aimed at those looking to get back into the construction industry. After two weeks, successful candidates get a Level 1 BTec in Construction Skills, covering basic brickwork, painting & decorating, health & safety, and interview skills.
 
wo weeks’ work experience is then arranged, with an interview at the end and possible employment opportunities. The course runs on a rolling basis, beginning on May 3, 16 and 31 and June 13.

Become a Community Learning Champion:
Community Learning Champions are volunteers who support people to explore their learning and training options, and take positive action. During the Festival of Learning the champions will be running drop-in sessions and ‘Pop-Up Learning Shops’ where people can get information, advice and support with finding learning that suits them.

Pick up a Learning Passport to earn a free course:
There’s a chance to win a free course if you take part in any of the taster sessions or courses during the Festival of Learning. Participants will get a Learning Passport, which will be stamped at any learning events they attend and their passports entered into a prize draw during a special learner recognition event at the end of the festival.
