Leading writers will be talking about their lives and work at Woolwich Centre Library on World Book Night on the 23 April.
And because the date falls on the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, the words of the Bard will also be celebrated during that week.
Shakespeare performances on 20 April
* Knit & Natter with the Bard - 10am to 12pm, (Booking not required, Refreshments available).
* Enjoying Shakespeare - Series of readings - 12:30pm to 1:30pm, (Booking not required,
Refreshments available).
World Book Night on 23 April
At midday author, Gloria Cameron will read from her book Case Dismissed! An Ordinary Jamaican Woman; An Extraordinary Life. The 83-year-old will look back on her life, from her childhood in Jamaica to her arrival in London 58 years ago, since when she has been widely involved in community affairs, was made a Justice of the Peace, and awarded an MBE in 1980. Gloria will also be signing copies of her book at the event which is supported by the Woolwich-based Caribbean Social Forum.
Also appearing will be, South African-born playwright and author Gillian Slovo who has written thirteen books, one of which - Red Dust - was made into a film starring Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Gillian is the daughter of anti-apartheid campaigners Joe Slovo and Ruth First. Gillian Slovo will talk about her book, Ten Days, at 8pm; this will follow a performance at 5.30pm of Shakespeare duets by students from Rose Bruford College from Sidcup as part of the Shakespeare 400 celebrations.
Both events are free and recommended for people aged 14 and over.
Ten Days is this year’s choice for the Cityread London programme which encourages all Londoners to read and share one book through the month.
Throughout the day there will also be readings from William Shakespeare.
Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald (right), Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries & Community Wellbeing, said: “These events are further examples of the work done by our libraries to promote the love of reading, and to host events aimed at readers of all ages.”
