From Monday 11th to Friday 15th April, Royal Greenwich Trading Standards worked in partnership with the Metropolitan Police to crack down on traders failing to comply with the law.

The coordinated effort was part of Operation Rogue Trader 2016 - a national campaign to tackle doorstep criminals, including rogue traders, loan sharks and distraction burglars.

Using information received from the National Trading Standards Scams Team (NTSST), Trading Standards intervened in 20 separate cases of scam mail and provided support and advice to the victims. Residents were advised on mass marketing fraud, and how prize draws and competitions are used to defraud vulnerable residents out of their money.

Information on the “Mail Marshal” programme in which residents can send suspected scam mail to the NTSST for investigation was also distributed as part of the preventative action being taken throughout the borough.

As part of the enforcement action, specific advice was given to 8 traders regarding compliance with the law. Businesses and consumers were also made aware of the Greenwich ‘What Trader?’ Scheme.

Each business registered with the ‘What Trader?’ scheme has been audited by Trading Standards and receives a customer satisfaction profile based on user comments. The profile can help other customers to decide whether to employ the trader.

Councillor Jackie Smith (photo, right), Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Environment said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich remains firmly committed to tackling rogue traders operating anywhere in the borough."

"Through partnership working with the Metropolitan Police and also the National Trading Standards Scams team, we can stamp out such criminal activity while raising awareness of scams and rogues traders to residents.”

Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Helen Millichap said (photo, left): “It has been another successful week of joint action and partnership working between the Metropolitan Police and the Royal Borough of Greenwich."

"Together, we are sending a loud and clear message to rogue traders: you will be caught and you will face the full force of law for engaging in this criminal activity.”
