WILMINGTON Del. - This is the High School student killed in Delaware, United States after she was assaulted by a fellow student, VLAD TV reports.

Amy Inita Joyner-Francis (16) reportedly went into the bathroom at 8 am on Thursday, April 21 but was later taken out on a stretcher. She died in hospital from her injuries following the assault.

According to the media she was engaged in a fight with another girl in a bathroom over a boy, before she was jumped on by a group of other girls.

Kayla Wilson says she was in a stall when the fight broke out. She said: "She was fighting a girl, and then that's when all these other girls started banking her, like jumping her, and she hit her head on the sink."

"Things like this shouldn't happen." Mayor Dennis P. Williams said at a press conference, adding "My heart bleeds for the family."

Wilmington police Chief Bobby Cummings said he didn't know of any incidents leading up to the assault, and he added that Howard is not known as a violent school.

Other media accounts say the victim did not believe in fighting. And Maxine Wilson, who lives near Amy's New Castle home said: "She would walk to the bus stop by herself," adding “I had never seen this little girl messing with anybody.”

* Mourners held hands during a vigil for the victim.
