A New Labour Mayor Of London, An Impending Referendum And `May Visitor' From New York Has Twitter Buzzing

by Benson Agoha | Politics

On Twitter today, there is a preamble to how the media view the re-emergence of David Miliband on British Politics, having left in 2013 to lead efforts of the International Rescue Committee and help save people from starvation and destruction.

"For some Labour supporters" said Twitter, "David Miliband is the one that got away. In 2010 he lost the Labour leadership election to his brother Ed, quitting politics to run the IRC in New York. Today he returned to British politics to support the Stronger In campaign."

Twitter said: "With Jeremy Corbyn proving to be a deeply polarising figure in his own party and a by-election coming up in Tooting the rumour mill went into overdrive."

But the preamble is on a part of what Twitter buzzed over the appearance of the former Labour Leadership Contender, who left Britain in 2013 to lead the
International Rescue Committee.

Unsurprisingly, his appearance at the British Museum, Monday where he was to introduce PM David Cameron before his speech activated the rumour meal, with some speculating the visit will herald his return to local politics.

Miliband, who was the
Member of Parliament (MP) for South Shields from 2001 to 2013 is being speculated as the potential candidate to fill the vacant seat left in Tooting by Sadiq Khan who won the Mayoral election on Friday.

Louise Ann Davies believes David Miliband himself would have given the idea of standing for the Tooting seat before flying across the pond.

She tweeted: "I expect Sadiq will be a full time Mayor, so his Tooting seat will be vacant" thought David Miliband 5 minutes before he booked his flight."

Jim Waterson was suspicious and tweeted: "David Miliband, popping over to London for EU ref while furtively Googling "when is Tooting selection meeting?"

Think Left was more deviant, tweeting "There is a horrifying suggestion that David Miliband might stand in Tooting … the prince from over the sea."

Is anyone afraid of his return? Paul Dreczko tweeted: "Lots of smears against David Miliband today. Seems Corbyn’s followers are sill worried about the return of Labour’s King over the Water."

For now, it seems to be all about the June 23rd referendum during which Brits will decide whether to breakaway from the European Union or remain part of the block.

Robert Peston tweeted: "Crikey. He's back from New York to play bigger role in EU remain campaign."

Theo Usherwood tweeted: "David Miliband is here at the British Museum to introduce David Cameron for his EU speech. He is here in a "personal capacity".

For now, his potential re-entry into frontline British politics is all speculation however and as everyone knows PM David Cameron can be passionate when a referendum is on a knife edge.

Think back to the Scottish Referendum of September 2014 "It will rip my heart apart if this Union we have carefully put together .... were to fall apart", he once publicly said as predicting a clear outcome for the Scottish Referendum proved harder by the day.

And with former Mayor Boris Johnson already settled on the Vote Leave bench, the appearance of David Miliband on the Together In bench makes for rejuvenated case to stay together. And the PM's warning today that Brexit might lead to war seems to be having effect.
