The historic St George’s Garrison Church in Woolwich got a spruce-up thanks to a partnership between the council and a local voluntary trust.
An 11-strong team made up of local apprentices and participants on the Royal Boroughs Local Labour Programme (GLLP) worked with the Woolwich Garrison Church Trust to clear up debris and rubbish and get the area looking pristine.
Local people can now enjoy the splendid surrounds of the 19th century St George’s Garrison Church every Sunday, and a series of open days for the local community are also planned. The clean-up is the latest in a number of recent projects undertaken by local people benefiting from GLLP. The scheme was set up to help out-of-work residents gain the skills and experience to put them on the road to a permanent job.
Councillor Sizwe James, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Economy and Smart Cities said: “It is really positive that local residents on our GLLP scheme have been able to give St George’s Church the once-over and I am sure that visitors will be grateful as it is now back to its best. We are committed to helping residents out of poverty and GLLP is about providing support to get them on the first step to employment. The fact that 74 per cent of participants so far have gone on to secure employment is really good news and I am proud of this success.”
St George’s Church is open every Sunday 10am–4pm from June to September and from 10am-1pm January to May.
