CA Police Chief Placed on Admin. Leave for Stabing Stepson With A Drill

Authorities of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office in Hayward, CA are investigating conflicting accounts of a fight between a law enforcement official and his stepson.

The Incident resulted in markings on the elder's face, stab wounds to the young man's chest, and a bullet in a wall, at their Fairview home on Monday, May 30, according a report by VLAD TV.

When officers responded to a call reporting violence at the family's Costa Drive residence at 10:30 a.m., they were greeted by Sonoma State University police Chief Nathan Johnson. Johnson immediately informed the deputies of his account, saying he fired a warning shot in the home in an attempt to de-escelate a confrontation that was building between the two.

But, while the officer reportedly looked roughed up, having suffered a minor injury to his face, within moments they encountered the more severely hurt Elijah Latimer, 20, who it would later be determined, had suffered a punctured lung following the stabbing, which was reportedly repeatedly done with a power drill. The 35-year law enforcement veteran claimed self-defense.

According to the account, both men were taken to a local hospital where their injuries were not determined to be life-threatening. None have been placed under arrest, as a family member who witnessed to conflict has refused to cooperate, according to sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly. Johnson has been placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed by the District Attorney's Office.
