The Red Ensign - the UK Merchant Navy's official flag – was raised on Friday, 2nd September, 2016 by His Worshipful Mayor Councillor Olu Babatola, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to mark Merchant Navy Day.

Rich in maritime history, Royal Greenwich is remembering Merchant Navy Day to honour the men and women who fought at sea during both 20th Century World Wars. The borough also celebrates the regional employment in the maritime industry and the UK’s dependence on modern day merchant seafarers, who are responsible for 95% of the UK's imports.

Seafarers UK, together with Sea Cadets, is the chosen Charity Partner for Royal Greenwich Tall Ships 2017, from 13 to 16 April.
