More than a year on and after accepting to settle a record $16.5 billion in litigation charges, Volks Wagen sales in the United States of America has finally notched upwards, according an Industry Week report.

The German auto-maker was exposed last September as using a smart software referred to as "defeat device" to hide emission levels from auto-testers.  The company admitted the allegation, leading to the exit of its former CEO just one day before he was to sign a new contract.

The incidence forced German authorities to respond with several arrests at home, as the government moved to check the embarrassment.

Volks Wagen then began recalls in early 2016 to install new software into affected vehicles.

The latest report is evidence that consumer confidence has been restored in the US and by extension, globally.
