South African African President, Jacob Zuma, yesterday commissioned the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in the South African city of Johannesburg.

A statement issued by the Nelson Mandela Foundation said "The official opening .. marks a significant period in our country’s history."

The centre, a multi-purpose facility was opened in Mandela's home town of Houghton. It is the official home of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and will act as a dialogue venue and an interactive archive.

South Africans will mark 20 years of their country's transition to democracy next year, after the 1994 general election, which ushered in democratic rule and elected Nelson Mandela.
