The National Aeronautics and Space Agency NASA, today sent the Olympic Torch to the International Space Station.

NASA's Expedition 38 crew waved farewell as the craft launched from south Mississippi into orbit today at 11:14p ET.

Residents of New York City were able to view from Times Square as the launch achieved lift off and, in a demonstration of technological feet, crew members were able to tweet from space.

NASA later posted the above photo as the craft docked and the hatches opened.

It comes just two days after India launched a probe spacecraft to Mars.

The successful launch called "Mars Orbiter Mission" took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the East Coast of India. The craft is set to travel for up to 300 days, reaching Mars orbit in 2014.

India's Scientists declared the launch a success moments after it's third stage of the capsule seperation from the rocket and entered orbit.

But the launch, achieved on a considerably cheaper budget than NASA's, has received mixed reactions from the public.

Critics argue that India, with so many poor citizens should not be delving into that kind of mission that involves several millions of pounds, part of which still comes from foreign aid.

The reality in India however is different as the launch received applauds.

Others however say that either way, India's scientific feets are once again being perfectly demonstrated by this first time successful launch.

Giving that India has also sent a probe to the Moon to search for evidence of water, the country may just be sending a clear strong message to the world.
