WOOLWICH: SOUTH LONDON COLLEGE EVACUATES OVER FIRE FEARS by Benson Agoha

The South London College, Woolwich was evacuated this afternoon after the fire alarm went off.

Students and Teachers of the College, occupying several floors of the Equitable House, Woolwich, were assembled outside the building at 4.30pm, as the fire service called in.

When Woolwich Online visited the scene, a fire crew was working to establish the cause of the alarm.

We asked whether there was an actual fire and a crew member told us he believed it would be a false alarm.

But a member of the front office desk for the building emerged later to invited the students inside. He said there was no actual fire, but the alarm glass was broken and it triggered the alarm.

The Equitable House is home to a betting shop, the South London College, Churches and several other businesses occupying the ground floor, including a Pharmacy, a Coffee House, an off licence and a Chinese Restaurant.

It overlooks the General Gordon Square, where electricians were working to wire and connect lights to the 34ft Christmas Tree, installed on Wednesday.
