Tesco Stores has opened an online Shopping Centre in Erith through which the Supermarkets plans to effectively service the grocery needs of the South East customers.
The `dotcom' Centre will use `industry leading technology to improve the availability and range of products' for online customers which will be delivered to homes in South East London and North West Kent.
The new centre is the High Street Retailers sixth Tesco store dedicated to online shoping and will employ 550 people (more people than started at their Woolwich Extra store a year ago). Tesco said many of the new staff are expected to come from the Borough of Bexley and surrounding areas.
Tesco said Erith was chosen to be the first in `Regeneration Partnership programme in a Dotcom Centre`.
The Supermaket also said the centre can stock 30,000 different products and includes a new stock management system. It already has dotcom centres in Croydon, Enfield, Crawley, Greenford and Aylesford.
The news was well received by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who was quoted as saying:
“This is excellent news for London’s economy, not only creating 550 new jobs but also proactively helping many long-term unemployed people to get back into work."
He further said: "I would like to congratulate Tesco for joining forces with Bexley Council and Job Centre Plus on a scheme that will help to make our economy even more productive and successful.”
